ITS ORIGIN
It is at the beginning of the 20th century that women begin to demonstrate, in North America and in Europe in order to obtain better working conditions as well as the right to vote.
The United States, thanks to the support of American socialist women, decided to organize the " National Woman's Day " in 1909, celebrating equal civil rights . The following year, women were called upon to organize an international day in their respective countries every year.
It was during the Second World War that this phenomenon became more widespread and that the March 8th was chosen as a date and recognized only in 1977 by the United Nations as an official and international women's rights day , encouraging countries to celebrate women's rights. In France, it was not until 1982 that this day was recognized by the state.
A STRUGGLE, OBJECTIVES
International Women's Day and a day of action and of mobilization . Many events then take place on this date: demonstrations, debates, forums, concerts, exhibitions… All on key themes related to women's cause and following a theme given each year by the United Nations.
Last year, the theme was “ Women in Leadership : For an Equal Future in the COVID-19 World,” celebrating the efforts of women and girls around the world to achieve an even more equal future in the wake of the coronavirus pandemic, who were on the front lines of the crisis as healthcare workers, innovators, government leaders, and more.
This theme also echoed that of the 65th session of the Commission on the Status of Women speaking about women's participation in decision-making processes, equal pay, sharing of domestic tasks and the elimination of all forms of violence.
WHAT PROGRAM FOR THIS YEAR?
On the menu for 2022, "equality today for a sustainable future" . To quote the site unwomen.org , - “in recognition of the contribution of women and girls around the world who are leading the charge on climate change adaptation, response and mitigation, towards building a more sustainable future for all people.” The idea is simple, maintain efforts to close the gender gap despite the climate crisis we are facing.
Because this day should not be a pretext for any commercial recovery and because at the Atelier St Eustache, Women are at the heart of our work and our lives . We invite you to follow this year's theme and support the various initiatives launched by organizations and associations.
