Stop the waste!

Posted by Atelier St Eustache on

When we talk about waste, it is often the food sector that comes to mind . However, more than 630 million euros of consumer products are thrown away
or destroyed each year in France.

And even more so when Spring arrives . We all have the same idea in mind: to do a big sort out. And this often involves tidying up the wardrobe. Everything tends to end up in the trash when we can now do better.

In France , between 10,000 and 20,000 tonnes of textile products are thrown away each year , figures that are increasingly alarming. Especially when we know that the fashion industry is one of the most polluting in the world, after oil. It seems that 85%
of our clothes end up in the trash and that a French person throws away on average 12kg of clothes , shoes and household linen per year.
Fortunately, today it is entirely possible to find alternatives to get rid of the clothes you no longer wear while reducing your impact on the planet . Used or not, all these textile materials can be, for the majority of them, recycled and/or resold on dedicated platforms.

1) Our tips

1st option : Container storage

A first alternative accessible to all. After having tried to give away your old clothes
to your loved ones without success, consider placing them in containers . Present in
In many cities across France, these bins are there to collect your clothes before they are sorted. The most worn ones will be recycled and transformed , into insulation for example. Those that are in good condition will be redistributed for solidarity and social purposes.

2nd option : Dedicated platforms

Whether it's Vinted , La Reboucle , Leboncoin , Vestiaire Collective , there are many clothing resale platforms.
A great idea that allows you to empty your closets but also to make a little money in return. No matter the brand, the clothing, the pair of shoes or the accessory, everything is sellable. All you have to do is take a photo of your item and follow the steps to put it online and that's it.

3rd option : Find a new use for them

The current trend is Do It Yourself, so why not transform your old clothes? Whether it's tea towels, sponges, masks, fabric wrapping paper, there are
an incredible number of tutorials on the internet to get you started on these projects .

2) Even the biggest ones are getting involved

Some world-famous brands are trying to change their habits in order to offer more ethical clothing. This is particularly the case of Patagonia, which in order to generate less waste , recently proposed to no longer put a logo on its clothing. In addition, the brand also announced its definitive withdrawal from the corporate clothing market. Indeed, on Wall Street and in Silicon Valley, it had become customary for many companies to offer a vest flocked with their logo, followed by that of Patagonia. This is how today, this trend has been interrupted by the brand which stops its production of "midtownuniforms" as they are called in the USA.
A real awareness which can therefore be welcomed, at a time when far too many companies still consider their turnover as the priority.

3) Atelier St Eustache rolls up its sleeves

Faced with a society in constant change, where ecology is becoming a cause that concerns us all, Atelier St Eustache has decided to strengthen its commitment by offering you a recycling solution for your favorite cute socks .
Indeed, it is now possible, thanks to our new partnership with the company Redonner, to recover energy from our socks by transforming them into CSR (solid recovered fuel) in order to give them a second life.
We have also decided to support your commitment by rewarding you as soon as you donate clothing to Redonner:

Find all the information in our “ Our commitments ” tab.

In the midst of a system that pushes us towards daily overconsumption, it is now more than essential to change and adapt our consumption patterns.
At our level, we can all take an extra step to maintain our lovely planet. And you? What will be your next initiative?
