Welcome to this week's creative article!
As you know, they are imagined in France , everything comes from Violette's brain ! And it is precisely on this point that we want to insist today. Socks are a funny accessory and what's more, we wear on our feet . But believe it or not, it takes imagination to create them.
So what goes through Violette's head when the idea for a new drawing comes up?
She first draws her inspiration from buildings with unique architecture or the neighborhoods she visits during her travels . If you want to know more about the inspirations for sock models, it's in these articles .
Once the inspiration is acquired, Violette thinks of the sock as a painting . First of all, the sock is imagined flat . That is to say, Violette draws the patterns of the sock flat, as if the sock were opened in two and then spread out to form a rectangle (with heels…🤔).
More explanation thanks to the following diagram:
Why draw the sock flat in the first place? Simply to help visualize the entire drawing on the foot, from the tip of the toes to the top of the ankle. This is then a real visualization gymnastics that takes place. Violette visualizes both the sock flat and on a foot .
It has also happened a few times that the drawing once finished flat does not give anything once drawn in the shape of a foot. This is what we call a flop . With experience, the visualization of socks flat is becoming more and more reliable for Violette. đź’Ş
This entire creation phase is done by hand . It is only when the drawing seems faithful to Violette's idea of it that she turns on her computer to transcribe the paper drawing into digital format . She uses special software for this.
However, the creation path is the same: a first digital drawing of the sock flat, then a second of the sock worn in profile . The goal of copying the drawing in digital format is to make a more precise pattern. This is also essential for the factory that manufactures our socks. Because these are the digital drawings that Violette provides to the factory and on which they base themselves to create the first prototypes .
There you have it! Now you know even more about the development and creation of Atelier St Eustache sock models. See you next week! 🥰
