D’où vient la St Valentin ? 💞

Where does Valentine's Day come from? 💞

Posted by Adèle Beaucoup on

There are many hypotheses about the origin of this holiday. So I cleared up the mystery this week.

Thanks to my research I can now tell you the mythical story of Valentine's Day.

Behind this myth of the celebration of love lies first a strong presence of religion. Indeed, it was in the 14th century that this celebration was born in a Great Britain that was still Catholic. This day was chosen because the collective unconscious thought that it was this day that birds chose to pair up . Just like Halloween , this custom has remained in use and has spread to neighboring countries .

At the time, the poet and prince Charles of Orléans (1394-1465) wrote about this feast as the day when lovers chose their partners or renewed their oath . Charles of Orléans is said to have chosen this saint as the "patron saint" of lovers in homage to the " court of love " that his own mother, Valentine Visconti, held at her home.

Another great figure, Pope Alexander VI , is said to have decided to designate a "patron saint" of lovers: Valentine of Terni.

There is much historical evidence that this romantic celebration reached couples of the European aristocracy. Then, in the popular milieu in the 18th century .

It was in the 19th century that the commercialization of this celebration began. First with " love cards " which echo the small notes that were exchanged between valentines and valentines in the 14th century. Then gifts of all kinds began to flourish everywhere. We count of course flowers , more particularly red roses , then chocolates and evenings at the restaurant , at the cinema , etc.

Today, two teams compete every year, the pro- Valentine's Day and the anti -Valentine's Day. And among those who like to celebrate this holiday, there is a real desire to think outside the box , to do different things on this February 14th. For example, finding an original gift , or spending the evening in a mysterious place . And you? What are you going to do for Valentine's Day?

The little anecdote of the day

Legend has it that St. Valentine actually comes from the man who secretly married Roman soldiers in love . During the reign of Emperor Claudius II, who had banned same-sex marriage , St. Valentine secretly arranged these marriages. February 14 is said to be the date linked to his martyrdom .
