ZOOM SUR : LANG ET BAUMANN

FOCUS ON: LANG AND BAUMANN

Posted by Atelier St Eustache on

During the shooting in Le Havre of our Vue du Ciel collection, we were able to admire and photograph one of the sublime works of the duo Lang and Baumann that we wanted to show you in this article.

An artistic couple

Lang and Baumann

Since their meeting 31 years ago, Sabrina Lang and Daniel Baumann have worked together on projects that are more eclectic than each other, touching on installations, sculptures and murals. Most of their works are contextual, adaptable to different situations, and even usable.

The artist couple lives together in their gigantic studio in Burgdoff, which has a strange green and white cabin attached to it. It is simply one of the works of the two artists; a hotel with only one room, but in a very luxurious way. Named Everland, this hotel was originally created for Expo 0.2, then installed at the Palais de Tokyo, then next to their studio as a guesthouse.

Their work

Lang & Baumann

The couple works with a wide range of materials including wood, metal, paint, carpet… Each material is chosen for its plastic and functional quality: the softness of a carpet and its acoustics, the shine of a plastic surface, the kinetic pattern of an installation. Each work acts and is determined by a careful analysis of the place and its context, in fact achieving something that goes against the models of perception.

In their works, we find 60's shapes and patterns from their childhood. Thus, the two artists make enormous reference to the past and use many familiar signs as a strategy, connected to a collective imagination. Lang and Baumann, or L/B, have produced many works in France, such as Beautiful Setpz #7 , a concrete staircase erected on the banks of the Saône not far from Lyon in 2013.

The Ocean Gate

Oceane - Lang and Baumann

This is the work that we discovered during our shooting for the Fall-Winter 2021 collection carried out on the beaches of Le Havre. From then on, we appreciated the artistic and photographic possibilities that this sublime installation offered us and the poetry that emerged from our photos. We then played with its perspectives, and you have certainly been able to see it in the background on the photos of our Fucino Botella or even have had the chance to receive it in a silver version ;)

For this work, the artists also played with perspectives. Named Porte Océane , it is a white structure with angular contours, placed on the beach, in line with Avenue Foch. It emerges from the pebbles like an immense frame that cuts out the horizon, like a door to the heavens. Originally created for the 2017 edition of Un Été au Havre, it was redesigned by the architects to remain permanently on the Normandy beach, having won over a good number of visitors.

Did you spot this sublime creation in our photos?
