Being a sock fan is great, but knowing how they are made is even better!
At the beginning of June, we went to visit our Italian factory to see how the current production was progressing and to chat with the teams. It was a joy to observe the precision of the work and to see all these new socks just waiting for your feet!
So here we go, we're taking you with us on a detour to Italy! 🍝
How do you make a sock? 🏭
The world of socks is as exciting as it is technical ! Especially when it comes to making transparent socks, because they require specific know-how and yarn.
The manufacturing stages
Technical drawing ✏️
For this first step, it starts in Lyon. A lot of thought in advance allows Violette, creator of Atelier St Eustache, to draw each of her sock models on technical drawing software. Subsequently, her drawings will be converted onto a diskette to launch production.
Knitting 🧶
Few people know this, but socks are made by tubular knitting . This tube knitting is done in one go, encompassing the heel but leaving the toe open.
The remeshing 🧵
To close the toe, some industries use machines, but our Italian factory closes all your socks by hand . A technical step that requires precision and know-how.
The training 🧦
The forming step is necessary so that your socks can have a nice shape adapted to your feet. So they are placed on a foot-shaped machine and are then heated to be shrunk to the ideal size.
Quality control 👌
After the manufacturing comes the quality control . There, the teams scrutinize your beautiful socks one by one to not let any holes or threads stick out.
Packaging 📩
First, the workers come to hand-sew the riders that join the socks together. And finally, your socks are put in a pouch ! Until today, it was Violette and her mother who took care of it (a titanic job!) . The factory has now taken over!
And after all this process, your cute socks are ready to be sent! 💌
Every time we come to visit the teams, it's always a real pleasure! A short but intense Italian stay. So see you soon Italy 👋
