Le Black Friday, good deal ? 🛍

Black Friday, a good deal? 🛍

Posted by Adèle Beaucoup on

Having arrived in France a few years ago, the famous Black Friday day draws its history from the United States. And that's the subject of today's article!

Every year, every 4th Friday of November, Black Friday sets in. The day after Thanksgiving , Americans hit the store floors in search of the best deals of the year .

Because yes, if for us Black Friday is yet another sales period in the year, in the United States things are different. There are few sales periods in the United States, and Black Friday is really the day not to be missed , because the good deals are numerous and very interesting. We all know these mind-blowing images of crowds waiting for the stores to open and fighting for the products once the gates are raised.

This is also the beginning of a period of intensive consumption, since the good deals last until the end-of-year holidays . This allows retailers to empty their stocks and customers to get good deals on their Christmas gifts . But it is on Black Friday that the sales remain the most interesting.

Why is Black Friday called that?

The name is said to have originated in the 1960s following the observation of crowds of pedestrians rushing into stores. There is also an economic significance: Black Friday indicated the "coming out of the red" for retailers, that is, their sales were good enough to make a profit .

But beyond the fact that Black Friday comes from our neighbors on the other side of the Atlantic, this race for good deals is starting to be more and more present in France. Which can raise some questions about the nature and consequences of this day.

What do people think of Black Friday at Atelier St Eustache?

The Black Friday sales period is actually stormed by big brands . This period is much more controversial for smaller brands, such as designers for example. Big brands are known for their overproduction. And Black Friday, like all other repeated sales periods, "forces" multinationals to inflate the prices of their products all year round to offer more and more frequent and bigger discounts during the sales periods.

Most designers do not want to get into this spiral that fuels overconsumption . In fact, it is often the very foundation of their brand: producing less, better, at the right price.

This is what the "Make Friday Green Again" movement advocates, which wants to give a more ethical image to this "black" day. This movement has been joined by more than 220 brands that are committed to more responsible and committed consumption on the occasion of Black Friday.

As for Atelier St Eustache, the production of socks is certainly industrial but is not excessive. The quantities of pairs are ordered according to the minimum production requirements imposed by the factory, which are substantial. Sometimes, certain models sell less well than expected (or hoped for!), and then there are more or less substantial stocks left. It is thanks to these sales periods such as Black Friday that we can liquidate stocks and thus give meaning to this "overproduction". Every brand tries as much as possible to avoid having dormant stock. This is also the first reason for the invention of Black Friday : basically, retailers wanted to reduce their stocks and boost their sales as much as possible before the end of the year.

That's why not all models are on sale on the site. Best-sellers and timeless items sell out gradually and don't need a little help. The models of the season, which will not be renewed, are a little on sale. And the models from previous seasons, these original models that we dared to produce but did not have the success we had hoped for, all these socks that lie dormant before finding an original buyer, are at a much more advantageous price.

The subject of Black Friday and sales is very broad, and there are many things to say. We have summarized it for you, but we invite you to do more research on this subject, and above all: to contribute to consuming better , by buying from committed, ethical, and local brands!
